Commemoration First Encounter

Commemoration First Encounter

"It will be 375 years in December since Dutch explorer Abel Tasman sailed into Golden Bay and the history books when he experienced the first recorded encounter with Māori.

To commemorate that historical milestone, four days of activities are planned from December 16 that are expected to attract visitors from across New Zealand and overseas.

In what is believed to be a first, iwi of modern-day Golden Bay/Mōhua along with descendants of the dominant tribe of the area in 1642, Ngāti Tūmatakōkiri, are due to come together with invited guests from the Netherlands to mark the anniversary."
